Are you blind to advertising? Is there a happy developer answer?

As digital content owners and developers, we use advertising from an ad network in our apps or games. The ad network has become an almost necessary part of how we make money from our Android and iOS game titles. But as developers, little do we know that advertising is absolutely everywhere, and our players are bombarded by ad messages every day. Take a serious look around you right now and I’m positive you’ll see advertising everywhere. Whether it’s the branding on your laptop or cell phone, the labels on your clothing, the logo’d t-shirt you’re wearing, your shoes, the bus stop across the street, signs on buildings, newspapers, magazines, television, the Internet, the coffee cup in your hand, the video games your playing, even your own digital content ... the list is exhausting.

Back in 2000, Jupiter Research conducted a study and found that the average person will be exposed to some 950 online advertising messages every day, and that was double the 440 impressions of 1999! And remember, that was long before developers had access to concepts like digital content or an ad network.

Advertising and digital content marketing consultant Frank W Baker produced his own research data. According to his website, we typically see between 300 and 3000 advertising messages every single day. To say "that's a lot", would be a massive understatement.

But my favorite source is J. Walker Smith of Yankelovich Partners, who in 2004, released his company findings that the average person saw 500 advertising messages in the 1960’s/1970’s and today, with the introduction of massive digital content and the ad network, the average person now sees over 5,000 ads every day. Wow!

As a developer, movie maker, game player, and digital content consumer myself, I find that the current methods of advertising can be quite overwhelming and have caused me to become ad network blind (also known as Banner Blindness). And that's why I invented ctalyst. Advertising should never interrupt or interfere with the entertainment experience.
