Mobile App and Mobile Game Daily Active User (DAU) Calculator

If you’re a mobile game developer, you’ve learned that metrics are key to building a successful development business.

In this article, we demonstrate how to easily and quickly estimate your Daily Active Users before you begin making your mobile game.

Competition for audiences is fierce and mobile games and apps are downloaded quickly and voraciously. At the same time, the life cycle of a mobile game is pretty short with almost all but the most popular titles dying in less than six months.

The most common and easiest to understand is the metric of Unique Downloads (or Total Downloads).

This is the number of times your mobile app or mobile game has been downloaded to unique devices.

The Active Installs metric represents the number of users who have the downloaded mobile game installed on a device. Or alternatively, this is the number of users who have downloaded your game but have not uninstalled it.

Daily Active Users (DAU) is the number of game players who have opened your mobile game today or on a given day. This metric represents the number of players who are actually playing your game.

Putting Game Metrics and Download Stats to Work

Let’s say your game has been downloaded a total of 400,000 times combined from Android and iOS stores.

And let’s say your Active Installs are 250,000 and your DAU is 82,000.

This means that while you achieved 400,000 downloads only 250,000 players kept your game. This means that your game “stuck” with 62.5% of your audience.

With 82,000 DAU, compared to the 400,000 downloads, you have a retention of 20.5%. Or if you use the Active Installs as your base number (given that most installations are opened just once), you have a retention of 32.8% of your Active Installs.

Building a Business Case for Your Mobile Game’s In-App Store

We know that the typical iOS game player spends $1.08 on in-app purchases during the lifetime of your game, while Android users spend $0.43.

We also know that for every one iOS version of the game downloaded, 1.28 Android versions are downloaded.

Using our example above, we can then calculate that 35,965 of our DAU are iOS players and 46,035 are Android players.

We can also calculate that our game should be able to earn at $58,637 ($38,842 iOS + $19,795 Android).

Of course, there are no guarantees your game will ever earn a single penny. Even with millions of DAU, your game may never generate in-app store revenue. Generating in-app store traffic and creating compelling sales pitches and value propositions that align to your game and your audience is complicated.

Paid apps and games have much greater retention than Free apps and games. However, paid mobile apps and paid mobile games are downloaded less frequently.

73.47% of all apps and games will have 5,000 or less downloads. 25.26% of all mobile apps and mobile games will be downloaded between 5,000 and 1,000,000 times. The remaining 1.26% of all mobile apps and mobile games will gain between 1,000,000 (1 million) and 1,000,000,000 (1 billion) downloads.
